Music Mood Board: Songs For When You Stroll to the Polls (Because Y'all Better F*cking Vote)

You didn't think I'd make this week's Music Mood Board about anything other than voting, did you? Election Day is on Nov. 3 — though early voting is still encouraged, of course — and there's so much at stake. I won't go too into detail because 2020 (and really everything that's happened within the past four years) speaks for itself. So, if you're ready to see governmental change and policy enactment regarding topics such as social justice and climate change, for the love of all that is good and holy, vote. Listen to my political picks ahead and cast that ballot!

"100 Years" by Florence + the Machine

Inspired by the troubling world events that took place after 2016, this harp-infused song from the London-based band encourages everyone to fight against hate. It also speaks on the #MeToo movement, as women became more empowered to share their stories of sexual assault and harassment. Additionally, the title of the track, which dropped in 2018, is a nod to the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in the UK.

“Turntables” by Janelle Monáe

Monáe's civic song, which was featured in Amazon Prime's All In: The Fight for Democracy, is sure to galvanize you into action. "I keep my hands dirty, my mind clean / Got a new agenda with a new dream," Monáe proclaims. "I'm kickin' out the old regime / Liberation, elevation, education." Now that's what I'm talking about.

“Fight the Power” by Public Enemy

Another iconic protest anthem! While it's important to fight corrupt powers by taking to the streets in marches and demonstrations, remember that the power of the vote is also crucial.
