While a majority of space films focus on exploration, a number of them center on apocalyptic disasters and the implications on the survival of humanity. When a seven-mile-wide comet is headed straight for Earth, the US government brainstorms ways to deflect it or blow it up before it wipes out all of humanity. In an effort to destroy the comet, a spacecraft named Messiah is sent into space, carrying a crew of astronauts and nuclear bombs. When the bombs detonate, the plan backfires and the comet splits in two, forcing everyone to fight for survival.
