Daisy Anguiano Miranda's 11th birthday was truly a special one, as strangers from across the nation helped her celebrate with hundreds of — what else? — daisies.
Daisy, a patient at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, NE, battled Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in and around the bones, at the young age of 9. Just one year later, she was diagnosed with cancer for the second time and underwent both surgery and chemotherapy. When Ashli Brehm, who met Daisy at the hospital while undergoing treatment for her breast cancer in 2016, heard about the young girl's second diagnosis, she knew she wanted to step up in a big way to help the spirited child who provided inspiration and encouragement to her during her hospital visits.
Ashli started a campaign called Daises For Daisy on her blog, asking readers to send anything daisy-related to the hospital to surprise Daisy on her 11th birthday. And boy, did they come through! Both friends and strangers from near and far — as far away as Alaska! — came across the blog post and mailed Ashli various crafts, art supplies, letters, and daisy-themed gifts. When Daisy arrived to Nebraska Medicine on the big day, she was at a loss for words. "I almost wanted to faint, but I knew I couldn't," she said in an interview with the hospital.
