Man Rescues Dogs From Cages After Hurricane Florence

This Man Rescued 6 Dogs Trapped in Cages During Hurricane Florence, and Thank God

When natural disasters strike, the internet is often flooded with images of people going above and beyond to help their neighbors get out of harm's way. Recently, journalist Marcus DiPaola captured a video of a volunteer named Ryan Nichols freeing six terrified dogs locked in a cage in Leland, NC, during Hurricane Florence — and it's going viral.

Marcus shared the video on Twitter on Sept. 16 with the caption: "Rescued six dogs in Leland, NC, after the owner LEFT THEM locked in an outdoor cage that filled with flood water that was rapidly rising. We got them out, but by the time we left, the water was so high that they would have drowned. BRING YOUR PETS WITH YOU!"

So far, the tweet has more than 255,000 likes and over 88,000 retweets, and Ryan is being lauded as a hero. He told NBC News that their rescue group arrived in the nick of time. "The dogs were almost underwater," he explained. "And the water was rising quickly. Within an hour, they would have been dead." Fingers crossed that the pups have stayed warm and dry ever since being rescued.
