You Won't Believe What Happened to This Little Boy While His Mother Was on Facebook

In 2014, Claire Barnett was using her cell phone while hanging out by a pond. At the exact same time, her 2-year-old son, Joshua, was drowning in the water, but Barnett didn't notice. Her attention was on Facebook — she was uploading photos and wasn't aware of her son's distress.

According to the BBC, by the time the British mother pulled him out, Joshua was already unconscious and later died at the hospital. But Barnett's lawyer argued that his client isn't to blame — she was distracted by someone commenting on her Facebook page, not actively doing anything on Facebook herself. "Any mother going about the house can be distracted by a telephone or a washing machine," defense barrister Timothy Roberts said.

This wasn't the first occasion of questionable parenting of her four children. In August 2013, neighbors called social services after Joshua barely avoided being hit by a car while playing unsupervised in the road outside their home in East Yorkshire, England.

After pleading guilty to four counts of child cruelty, Barnett has been sentenced to five years in jail.

"Your son died due to your neglectful conduct," Judge Jeremy Richardson said. "I trust that you will never be allowed to have further unsupervised contact to any child. If you should have any further children, they will almost certainly be removed from you."
