In just over four weeks, the streets will be overrun with ghosts, goblins, and a menagerie of characters as kids get creative and start trick-or-treating. So just what will the costume of the year be? Last year you couldn't get your hands on an Elsa or Anna costume, but there are a few other contenders in the popular costume race this year. Party City gave us a rundown on what to expect this Halloween, and we've got to say, there are some pretty colorful options this year. From blockbuster hit films to some traditional ideas, here are the hottest costume themes of the year!
My Little Pony
One of the most popular licensed characters of the year is none other than My Little Pony! Whether your Pony fan dresses up like the animal itself or goes for a Rainbow Dash Tutu Dress ($20), there are plenty of ways to carry out this trend!
Disney's Descendants
If you have a tween at home, you know that it's all about Disney's Descendants right now. The offspring of Disney's greatest villains — Maleficent, Evil Queen, Cruella de Vil, and Jafar — make for some pretty spectacular costumes. Top on our list is Mal ($30), the daughter of Maleficent.
Paw Patrol
It doesn't get much cuter than Nickelodeon's Paw Patrol! The sweet show has equally cute costumes this year, including Chase ($30), who comes complete with adorable ears attached to his police hat.
Frozen Fever
You probably saw more than a few Elsa and Anna costumes last year, but you'll be seeing different versions this year. The release of the Frozen Fever short brought several new costumes with it — including this Elsa Costume Supreme ($40) that is complete with a glitter-print sheer overlay and a flowered headband.
Star Wars — The Force Awakens
There are plenty of Star Wars options available this year — Storm Troopers, Chewbacca, and Padma to name a few. But 2015 will be all about the eagerly anticipated Star Wars — The Force Awakens costumes. Even though the movie won't be out until December, expect to see little Finns ($30) and Reys ($30) trick-or-treating around your neighborhood.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The mutant turtles are back and bigger than ever, meaning there are many different costume types to choose from this year. This Raphael version ($30) is not only cute, but really comfortable too!
Classic Storybook Characters
Classic storybook characters, like Little Red Riding Hood ($70) and Alice in Wonderland not only harken back to the costumes we wore as kids, they make for some sweet Halloween photo ops!
Minions
What was the hottest flick of the Summer? Minions, of course! And every kid looks positively adorable in the costumes ($20)! Even if they just wear a hat with a pair of overalls, you've got yourself a costume!
Day of the Dead
The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is perhaps the most popular costume theme each Halloween. It's an easy look to pull off, with skeletons and hearts and some fancy makeup. This Scared to the Bone Costume ($33) has everything your little one needs — leggings, a tutu, and an eye mask (much easier to wear than a full-face mask) to complete the look.
