These Police Officers Gave Teens With Special Needs the Best Prom Ever — and We Can't Stop Smiling

Police Take Teens With Special Needs to Prom

Police officers from Boynton Beach, FL, were on an important mission, and this time it had absolutely nothing to do with catching criminals. Their marching orders? To give teens with special needs from John I. Leonard High School the best prom ever. And by looking at the photos, it's safe to say they succeeded.

Scott Harris, a retired police officer, explained that his wife, who teaches special needs at the high school, was the initial inspiration. "We came up with this idea of having these students come to the prom since they wouldn't have the opportunity if we didn't take the chance and bring them here," he told WPTV News.

The officers didn't simply show up to the prom's venue, either. They met the students beforehand and dressed in their best duds with corsages and boutonnières in hand.

"They are awesome kids and now they are mingling with the other kids, doing the same thing that kids who don't have disabilities are doing," Scott said.

The retired cop says that both the teenagers and the officers had a night they'll always remember.

"Just to have the kids doing something that they normally wouldn't do with the kids [who are disabled] . . . They are having a ball. They are laughing. They're dancing. They are totally out of their environment and having a great time."
