Teacher Apologizes For Dressing as Kanye West With Blackface
See the Halloween Costume This Elementary School Teacher Is Apologizing For
When it comes to Halloween costumes, the goal is, of course, to transform yourself into the character you've chosen to emulate as seamlessly as possible — but how far is too far? One Alabama elementary school teacher went there, and now he's apologizing for his poor judgment.
Heath Morrow, a fifth-grade teacher, went to a private Halloween party with his wife last weekend, and the couple posted a photo of themselves dressed up — Morrow in blackface as Kanye West, his wife as Kim Kardashian — to Facebook. Though the offensive photo has since been taken down, it made its way around social media and news outlets, ultimately getting back to the school district.
The status of Morrow's employment is currently unclear, though the Decatur City Schools Superintendent, Ed Nichols, spoke on the controversial incident during a news conference Monday morning:
"We are saddened as a district by the action of a member of our staff that have offended members of our community, and most of all, have taken away from the focus of our children and the good things that are going on in our school district and with our children. As a school district, we are looking into this issue and seeking advice from our legal counsel, and I want to make sure that all the citizens of our community know that we do not condone this action or any action that would bring any offense to a person based on their race, their religion, or any other matter."
An apology note from Morrow, in which he says his intentions were not malicious, was also read at the conference.

Nichols says he can't speak on follow-up actions but is meeting with leaders in the community to discuss the issue.
