Woman Adopts Dying Best Friend's Kids Before Christmas
Woman Is Making Her Dying Best Friend's Final Wish Come True by Adopting Her 3 Kids
Missy Armstrong has been best friends with Sara since 1999 when the two attended hair school together, and now that friendship is proving to be the most incredible bond. Sara, who has ALS, likely won't make it to Christmas this year, and Missy is making her dying wish come true by legally adopting her three children.
"She's in the final stages. I mean, the final, final stages," Missy told WQAD. "She said that she can deal with the fact that she's dying, but she can't deal with the fact that her kids would be split." Knowing that this was the most important thing to her friend, Missy agreed to adopt Cayden, 11, Micah, 9, and Amara, 8. "She would do it for me," Missy, a mother-of-two herself, said.
Sara couldn't believe the sacrifice Missy was offering to make for her, and broke down once she knew that her kids would be with Missy's family. "She just bawled and said, 'Are you kidding me? Do you swear?' and I said, 'Yeah.'"
Because this is all happening so close to the holidays, Missy's friend, Rhonda DeBruyn, wanted to help her make sure that Sara's children still had as wonderful a Christmas as possible under the circumstances. "My main focus was to make sure that the kids had a good Christmas because I wasn't sure that Sara was going to be here," DeBruyn said. She posted a request to Facebook asking for gift donations for all of the kids, and received a ton of toys and clothes to wrap up for them. She's also hosting a benefit for Missy to help raise funds for the family.
Missy is grateful for the generous people who have helped her with this sweet, yet heartbreaking transition so far, but is most grateful that the kids will be able to experience the tiniest bit of Christmas cheer at such a tough time. "They deserve it, they really do, it's been a rough road."
