Taylor Swift, You're My Daughter's First Celeb Crush — 10 Reasons I'm OK With That!

So the very last person that I thought would have Taylor Swift fever has officially jumped on the bandwagon — my 5-year-old daughter. And while my kindergartner is too young to know much more than a few of Taylor's songs (and that she's a pretty singer), I've decided that even if she eventually becomes a full-on Swiftie, I'm more than OK with that.

Here's why: when it comes to role models for girls, Taylor is pretty spot-on. For me, it all started when the singer was performing at the 2014 VMAs and right before pretending to jump off the "1989" sign, she joked, "I don't care if it's VMAs, I'm not jumping off." Yes! Amen sister. Now if only half the other starlets said the same thing to themselves before embarrassing themselves on stage! See, that Taylor has it together. She is successful, strong, independent, and gracious (among many other positives), but here are the main reasons I'm cool with my daughter looking up to the songstress. She Isn't Afraid to Laugh at Herself

Honestly, for me, this is one of the most important things in life, and I work daily to teach my daughter the fine art of laughing it off. Taking yourself too seriously can be a very stressful way to live, but Taylor, despite all the fame, pressure, and critics, still makes it very clear that she's more than happy to laugh at it all. It's refreshing and wonderful — and something I want my child to witness.

Her Songs Are Fun For Me Too

There is no doubt that Swift's music is fun! My daughter and I have dance parties to her songs — I love this time between us and the memories we are making to her music. Plus, and I mean no offense to Elsa the Snow Queen, but I can't stomach "Let It Go" any longer, and there is only so much Kidz Bop this mama can take.

She's a Businesswoman

T-Swift is smart and talented, which has made her do very well for herself in life. At 24, she's earned power, money, a handful of homes scattered all over the country, and even a private jet, but my favorite thing is that if my daughter catches a glimpse of Swift's castle-looking mansion on the rocks in Rhode Island, I can say this: "Guess who gave her that castle? Nope, not a prince. Nope, not her mommy and daddy! She bought that thing all by herself."

She Surrounds Herself With Good People

My dad always told me, "You're only as good as the company you keep," which was annoying as a teen, but as a parent, I completely agree. Taylor could probably be friends with anyone, but it seems to me (as an outsider) that she chooses to surround herself with a good group of people, both famous and not. Plus, anyone who is besties with Lena Dunham wins in my book, because that chick is pretty awesome too. Source: MTV

She's a Defender of the Bullied

Not only does she write awesome songs about people being mean, but she also has publicly spoken out about bullying numerous times — she even used Instagram to respond to a fan's question about bullying. It's always awesome to see anyone speak out against bullies, and I can only hope my daughter is inspired to do the same.

She Keeps It Classy

I am sure there are times when she lets loose and makes mistakes, and that is OK; she's 24. Get at it girl. But for the sake of her appearance and the fact that my daughter is now interested in her, I appreciate that Taylor respects herself, and her fans, enough to keep her public image clean and classy — and that I'll probably never need to explain to my daughter why her favorite singer is in the slammer for showing her hoo-hah in public. She's Not Overly Boy Crazy

Now, I don't know her, but it appears like she has a good love/life balance going on. Clearly the girl has had some heartbreak, but we also do not see her on the arm of a new famous boyfriend every 10 minutes. Sure, she's dated around. She's a young, talented girl; I'd expect that. But it definitely doesn't consume her, which is something I'd hope my daughter would take away from watching her. Source: CBS

She Dresses Age Appropriately

I don't need to tell you that most of the young ladies in Hollywood do not dress, how do I say, appropriate for their age. Taylor breaks that mold too. Sure, she'll show a little skin here and there, but I've never looked at her outfit and said to myself, "No daughter of mine will be caught dead wearing something like that." Her style tastefully fits her age and always has — and it's one that I feel sets a good example for girls. Source: MTV

She Writes Her Own Music

Taylor could easily have people writing songs for her, but she does it herself. The fact alone that she writes her music is impressive to me. I'm a big fan of writing in general — I think it's a fabulous form of self-expression, especially for children. I hope my daughter will feel the same about the art, and I love that a young singer in the limelight is modeling it with such grace. Source: Giphy

This heartfelt video of Taylor Swift singing to this young boy with cancer pulled at my mommy heartstrings in a big way, but this is also a shining example of how everyone should make time to serve others (no matter how busy you may be). Plus, if you don't love her after this, then I don't even know what to say.
