This Boy Got a Cat For Christmas After His Pet Died, and We Are Actually Weeping

Ever since Mari Brooks and her 12-year-old son Austin's cat passed away in November, their household has been a little more glum than usual. And while grieving is a huge part of coming to terms with the loss of a pet, Mari knew she'd make Austin's holiday season by surprising him with a new cat named Gizzard — or Gizz for short — she rescued from the Humane Society of Genesee County, where she works. Luckily, Mari caught Austin's reaction on camera, and we've never seen something so pure.

"Austin has been a volunteer at [the Humane Society of Genesee County] for about two years now," Mari told POPSUGAR. "He comes in to play with the kitties, walk dogs, and he helps me at events that I plan. Austin loves all animals! But kitties really hold a special place in his heart. Our kitty passed away on Nov. 14, and that was his best friend. He loves to snuggle with them and play with them too."

According to Austin's mom, he and Gizzard hit it off from the very night he came home.

"They are best friends! They sleep together every night and when Austin calls Gizzard he comes running," Mari said. "They play all day! When Austin is at school or wrestling practice Gizzard is sleeping in the chair waiting for him!"

And to make the situation even more heartwarming, Gizzard arrived at the humane society on Nov. 14 — the very same day Mari and Austin lost their cat; yes, clearly their friendship was meant to be.

Ever since welcoming Gizzard into the home, Austin's been a top-notch cat dad. He does everything from feeding his new friend to scooping out the litter box regularly.

"Austin is a big sports kid," Mari explained. "To see a kid who is a beast in football and wrestling get so emotional over a kitty is what killed me." All we can say is, this seems like a match made in heaven!
