Slimming — but not TOO slimming — high-necked, knee-length dresses made up the bulk of Kate's working wardrobe when she became a member of the royal family. No dangling straps or bulging bags for Kate — it's all about the sleek, inscrutable box clutch. She has them in all the colors of the rainbow, but her most used are in go-with-everything tan, cream, chocolate, black, and navy, while her favorite labels are L.K.Bennett, Stuart Weitzman, Jenny Packham, and Alexander McQueen. Now if only we knew what she kept in them . . .

Smart, preppy, stylish, and timeless, the duchess has proved that breton stripes are perfect for sailing . . . and polo . . . and sporty engagements, and well, basically everything. The duchess has three different breton-striped tops that she has worn in public on many, many occasions.

Along with the office dresses, another grown-up lady staple of the duchess's wardrobe is the timeless skirt suit. Her Luisa Spagnoli red suit and Rebecca Taylor blue tweed two-piece are in regular rotation, and this year alone she has also worn her burgundy Paule Ka and her purple Oscar de la Renta.

Elegantly perched and perfectly plumed — oh, how we'd love to be let loose with Kate's millinery for a few hours . . . Her favorite hat-maker is Jane Taylor, with plenty of back up from Lock & Co.
