In my opinion, the key to the perfect New Year's Eve dress rests in two oftentimes conflicting truths: it must be more fun than a dress you'd typically wear to a party (i.e. an out-there color, an unexpected print, a dazzle of glitter), and it must keep you warm. Unless you're living it up somewhere warm (and if you are, #jealous), it's essential your New Year's Eve look be somewhat utilitarian.

How do you ensure comfort without sacrificing glamour? Finding dresses in heavier materials (jacquards, velvets, cashmere), higher necks, and bold sleeves are easy options to look out for. Go as short as you're comfortable with, and add a thick pair of opaque tights. My personal favorite are these Sweater Tights ($12) from Nordstrom that make your legs feel like they are, well, wearing a sweater!

Here, six dresses that fit the bill.

If you're going for a more bohemian vibe this New Year's Eve, opt for a dress with puffy sleeves and barrel cuffs, like Milly's Sherie Dress ($480). The metallic sheen makes it superfestive.
