Ali Wong Honors Her Heritage in a Traditional Vietnamese Dress and Headpiece

Ali Wong paid tribute to her roots during her latest red carpet appearance. The actor stunned in a traditional Vietnamese áo dài while attending the Time100 Gala in New York City on April 26. Wong, who's of half-Chinese, half-Vietnamese descent, worked with Vietnamese fashion designer Thai Nguyen and stylist Tara Swennen to bring the meaningful garment to life.

Featuring intricate beading and feather detailing, Wong's custom white gown came with dramatic sleeve attachments and a complementary headpiece, which she paired with floral-shaped pearl earrings from Lele Sadoughi. Nguyen described the actor as a "Vietnamese Swan Lake Queen" in the showstopping dress, thanking her for "this iconic moment representing the Vietnamese culture and the beauty of the áo dài." Wong, who landed on Time's list of 100 honorees this year, has worn Nguyen's pieces in the past, including a rainbow sequin dress at the "Always Be My Maybe" premiere in May 2019.

Nguyen famously outfitted Kelly Marie Tran in beautiful áo dài dresses for both the 2022 Oscars and premiere of "Raya and the Last Dragon" in 2021. The actor wore a green lace design and matching headpiece for the award show, while she chose a gold embroidered gown for the premiere. "Kelly and I share passion for what we do and a strong love for Vietnamese culture," Nguyen said at the time. "It is hard to put into words how much it means to me that we were able to join those emotions and experiences, turn it into an iconic ao dai, and share our heritage with the world."

At the Time100 Gala, Wong was joined by other stylish guests, including Doja Cat in a completely sheer Valentino gown, Kim Kardashian in a sleek white John Galliano dress, and Kaia Gerber, who wore a pleated Khaite dress while posing alongside boyfriend Austin Butler.
