Like pretty much anyone living in a cold climate, I've been wearing puffy coats for about two decades, so I was a little confused to see my go-to outerwear being pushed as a trend this Winter.

How could something so utilitarian and familiar, a piece that's become a no-nonsense staple for so many ladies, cross over into gotta-have-it territory? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying no — when fashion and function collide, I'm thrilled. Sneakers and oxfords? Sign me up. Athleisure? All day, erryday! So . . . puffy coats? OK, yeah, why not?

The trick to nailing this particular trend is to put a fresh spin on it. So leave that basic black puffy in your closet this season, and keep reading for a few foolproof tips on how to perk up your puffy.

The easiest way to add oomph is with unexpected color. From bottle green to Bordeaux, look for a fun, saturated hue. Lots of brands are having major sales at the moment, so now is a great time to hunt for deals.
