The Monterey 5 Return For a New Season, Which Means a Lot More Outfits With Hidden Meaning

Aside from an unbeatable soundtrack, here's one more thing the Big Little Lies HBO series had that the book didn't: a very talented costume designer, Alix Friedberg, who was behind the wardrobe of every character on the show of season one. Friedberg depicted so much about the women of Monterey, CA, through their outfits alone. Inspired by her own life as a mother as well as the story she helped to tell, Friedberg understood the importance of her role in the Emmy-winning series: "My job is to give an actor the second skin they need to become another person," she told W magazine.

Friedberg went as far as to assign Madeline, Celeste, Renata, Jane, and Bonnie — played by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz, respectively — favorite fashion labels, proving she had a true grasp on each lady's image. Read ahead for a full breakdown of last season's fashion, along with our own take on the clothes that brought these strong, spirited women to life on screen. Then get excited for season two, which premieres June 9 and stars Meryl Streep!

Madeline Martha Mackenzie
HBO

Madeline Martha Mackenzie

Madeline (played by Reese Witherspoon) brings her daughter Chloe to school in Dolce & Gabbana florals and poppy cardigans. Her bag collection, which includes the Givenchy Nightingale, is neutral but notable, a subtle advancement to some very colorful looks. Madeline belts her dresses, buttons her cardigans, and pulls knee-high boots over her jeans, straying on the preppy side. She is always put together, polished, and up to date, mostly because the people of Monterey expect her to be so. But every woman is hiding something, and when Madeline's clothes come off, her secrets are revealed — literally.

Celeste Wright

Celeste Wright

Celeste (played by Nicole Kidman) could not boast a more free-spirited wardrobe. Save for her old lawyer looks — sophisticated blouses and bodycon dresses — Celeste looks like a bohemian princess when she is off duty or just watching the children. Her sweaters are cozy and oversize to hide the bruises from her abusive relationship, and her dresses long. It seems even Celeste's wardrobe is helping to mask her reality at home; she dresses with a sense of luxury and comfort, though inside, she's completely trapped. Perhaps flowy silhouettes and delightful shades of pink are subtle ways to sugarcoat her troubled marriage.

Jane Chapman

Jane Chapman

Jane (played by Shailene Woodley) wants to be a normal mom, and so she dresses the part. Dark peacoats, skinny jeans, flat boots, and crossbody bags allow her to move quickly and without notice. Jane doesn't want to stand out, but would rather blend in. Much to her surprise, almost every woman in Monterey has proudly defined her own sense of style. So Jane's clothes become a sort of mysterious uniform. Her plainness is peculiar, and everyone can see that.

Renata Klein
HBO

Renata Klein

Renata (played by Laura Dern) has her life under control, and her wardrobe reflects that. Because even when she is freaking out — frantic because her daughter Amabella is being bullied at school or ditched for a better party — Renata has had time to change out of her work clothes into flattering flares and luxurious-looking sweaters. Renata has not only shaped her closet to define her status, but she has an eye for style, seamlessly changing into a Stella McCartney printed jumpsuit and oversize sunglasses for her daughter's birthday. You might never think Renata has "nothing to wear" but instead, the perfect outfit for every occasion. Her clothes are her armor, and she's invested in the most foolproof uniforms.

Bonnie Carlson
HBO

Bonnie Carlson

Bonnie (played by Zoë Kravitz) might only wear sustainable clothing and handmade jewelry, based on how health-conscious she is. When she throws up her hair into a sloppy bun, piles on necklaces, and heads to yoga class in a sports bra, she looks like a glowing superhero. She is the type of woman with natural sex appeal. Long patterned kimonos do not overwhelm her figure, but highlight her petite frame. Everything she wears induces envy because she appears so relaxed in the most eccentric pieces — the type of clothes the other mothers of Monterey would never dare to wear. Just like most of those women would not dare to put themselves in the position Bonnie is in — she is a casual friend and mentor to her rebellious step-daughter, a mother to her own daughter Skye, and the girl who stands between a biting Madeline and her ex-husband, Nathan.
