Why I'm Obsessed With Diane Keaton's Style, and How I Make It My Own

Diane Keaton has been one of my ultimate style icons for as long as I can remember. Ever since I first saw Annie Hall, I was hooked. She's the OG of borrowed-from-the-boys style, and I couldn't get enough of her button-downs, high-waisted pants, oxford shoes, and more. The namesake of the film, Annie's style is Diane's, Diane's is Annie's. And as such, we have all been given the gift of Diane's edgy-meets-tailored style ever since, pushing boundaries, unapologetically chic to her core.

Over the decades, it's clear that there are a few pieces Diane will never give up on: suiting, quirky footwear, belts, and lots and lots of hats. Rarely veering from her black-and-white palette, Diane is my New York City style guide, even if she's choosing to live her own life on the West Coast. And for what it's worth, Diane, if you're listening: NYC would welcome you back with open arms, whenever you decide to rejoin the style community that fits your chic color palette!

In the golden age of social media, and much to my own personal excitement, Diane has taken to posting mirror selfies in her closet on Instagram, under the name @diane_keaton. I'm able to wake up every morning and not have to imagine WWDW (what would Diane wear?) . . . I can actually see it! Camel trousers with a matching double-breasted coat? Check. Head-to-toe white suiting, complete with a matching waist belt and hat? That's in there too. Wide-leg jeans and a black turtleneck? Yes, I even have brand-new inspiration for my denim look, thanks to a woman who, frankly, belongs in some sort of style hall of fame, if you ask me.

I love that Diane assuredly dresses for herself and no one else and that she does so with such stunning style that you can't help but want to emulate her every look. Her Instagram captions themselves take on the same sentiment, as they're written in all caps. It is something she felt she had to address about a month ago with a post in which she wrote, "NOTE: I USE ALL CAPS BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT LOOKS. I PROMISE I'M NOT SCREAMING AT YOU." Always with a stylist's eye.

While I might not always find I've woken up on the side of the bed that possesses as much confidence as Diane's closet, with a quick open of Instagram, her style inspiration certainly has a way of getting my head in the game by at least my first cup of coffee. And while I certainly mix a bit more denim and t-shirts into my daily uniform to make it my own, Diane's style has taught me many a lesson in keeping it chic. Namely:

  1. Silhouette is everything, and structure should never be ignored.
  2. Anything originally crafted for the boys has a sneaky way of looking even better on a woman.
  3. Turtlenecks are always a welcome layering piece.
  4. A great hat is never a bad idea . . . especially on bad hair days.

So, after you've given my ultimate icon a follow on Instagram (which you can do right here), let's celebrate some of her chicest recent looks, shall we?
