I have to admit, when someone says "denim skirt," I immediately think of my go-to outfit in middle school: a J Brand mini with a Juicy Couture terry cloth zip-up and those Sugar Floatie flip-flops (OMG, yes!). I don't think this will ever change. But I am willing to adopt new ideas as the years roll on and invest in new silhouettes when it's appropriate.

Like right now, for example, when there's a clear return of the maxi skirt on the runways and also a hint of nostalgia at play. Women are wearing tube tops with tie-dye jean skirts and '90s minimalist sandals for a night out at the bar. Then there are fashion houses that like to disrupt trends — R13, Ksenia Schnaider, Re/Done, and Unravel Project, to name a few — and these brands bring a whole new level of experimentation to your classic denim skirt, along with some extra material.

The good news is, there are so many different styles that still pass as cool. Whether you always sprinkle in a little bohemian flavor or you're all about the edge, you can find inspiration ahead. And, once you're done scoping out these 2019 looks, feel free to shop our favorite selects, which run the gamut from long and distressed to neon and surf-inspired.
