Coach's Runway Is a Trip Back to the '80s — Grab Your Leather Jacket and High-Tops

All the kids at Coach Spring/Summer 2020 were dressed in retro shades of leather — mustard yellow skirts, cherry red, and oxblood — and Kaia Gerber had the honor of wearing the silver metallic slacks. Most of these pieces had long, seatbelt-like straps tied loosely at the back, for a little more movement as the models bopped their way down the runway to '80s electropop band The Human League. Coach's Stuart Vevers has evidently been binge-watching Brat Pack flicks. There was a romantic pink dress quite early on in the lineup that could've been swapped out for the one Molly Ringwald's character Samantha wears in 16 Candles.

Even so, the new Coach pieces — especially the two-toned Mary-Jane kitten heels and the high-top multistrap sneakers — feel like fresh must haves that Kiernan Shipka or Maisie Williams could style masterfully. As for the clothes, I'm already eyeing the button-front periwinkle gray skirt that's printed with a graphic of an '80s PC computer — you know, the ones with the big, chunky monitors that are so outdated, they look like they came from another planet? And the marigold martini sweater vest is a dream — just wait until I get my hands on that!

Regardless of the retro theme at play, Coach's runway still followed suit with some of the other trends we're noticing this season. A little silk, lace romper underneath a leather jacket further confirms that lingerie is outerwear! And this coming Spring, it seems like every woman will delight in her own hot-pink moment. At Coach, that looks like a leather pencil skirt and matching moto jacket, which doesn't feel out of place at all when you just stepped off New York City's High Line and all you want to do is run home, turn on "Video Killed the Radio Star," clip in a barrette, and dance around in your high-tops.
