In the midst of unprecedented times (sigh), the only predictions we can confidently make are about what we'll be wearing. For 2022, that's a cool lineup of trends that draw on '90s and 2000s fashion, inspired by the spring collections we watched coming down the runways just a few months ago. Now, with influencers and fashion insiders providing some ways to interpret the looks in our day-to-day, we're ready to embrace a new year of dressing, and it's decidedly more, well, more than it has been in recent memory.

In response to all our time staying home, living in dressed-down basics (read: sweatpants), and missing the many joyful reasons to get all dolled up, the 2022 dress code is a maximalist's dream. Sure, there are easy silhouettes to choose from — maxi-length skirts and dresses and wide-leg, baggy pants — but the finishes, accessories, and fabrics are bolder and brighter, a little skin-baring, and made for showing off, on a Zoom screen or otherwise. Here, get a glimpse of the top eight trends for 2022, and shop your favorite pieces to put your personal spin on the year's biggest styles.

01

Minis

Look out for thigh-grazing hemlines taking over this year. From miniskirts to dresses and coordinate sets, designers are bringing back the '90s and 2000s staple for 2022.

02

Cutouts

2021 introduced bolder cutouts to our wardrobes — now you'll find them all over tops, pants, and dresses, giving the everyday a little more edge.

03

Wide Legs

TikTokers were perhaps the first to declare the end of the skinny jean, and while we firmly believe you should wear whatever you want, you will see wide-leg trousers and baggy denim cropping up for the rest of the year, making outfit proportions just a little more dramatic. Hey, we'll take it — as long as the drama is relegated to our wardrobes.

04

Retrofied Kicks

From Nike's Air Jordans to New Balance's 550 sneakers, throwback kicks are back in favor again. This time, look for candy colorways and pair them with easy denim for the full effect.

Extra Add-Ons

In 2022, you'll find a lot less of the fashion world paying attention to Coco Chanel's old adage: "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off." Instead, more-is-more accessories will rule this year, giving way to chunky necklaces, oversize earrings, brightly colored bags, and statement shades. Pile 'em on to create outfit interest with mixed materials and textures.

06

Bold Color

Even while minimalists may cling to neutral colorways, you'll find overwhelmingly that collections are bolder and brighter. Saturated hues are about to make 2022 pop.

07

Maxi Hemlines

Minis are having their moment, but on the flip side, maxis are too. In case you can't make up your mind — or like to live in extremes — you'll find both are featured prominently by designers who are crafting floor- and ankle-grazing hemlines that are made as much for your day-to-day as they are for occasion dressing.

08

Crochet

Crocheted pieces are the next iteration of the fashion world's love affair with knits. While we've been living in knit sets and sweet sweaters, crochet will be a prominent staple now and into the warmer months, lending a crafty, '70s-cool vibe to your looks.
