For her role as the 2022 Oscars' preshow host, Laverne Cox stunned in a strapless black velvet gown by August Getty Atelier. Showcasing an angular neckline, a fitted bodice, and a voluminous exaggerated waist, the couture design introduced an element of Victorian glamour to the red carpet while still feeling modern and architectural. A voluminous black shawl cut in a billowing fabric framed the design like a painting and descended into a cloud-like train flowing behind Cox's gown.

To convey even more classic glamour, she decided on an elegant updo comprised of a high bun and cascading, face-framing layers. To round out her Oscars look, Cox chose chandelier earrings and rings by Dena Kemp. Stylist Christina Joy Pacelli shared her work on Instagram, revealing that Cristóbal Balenciaga was part of the inspiration for the ensemble. Indeed, the dramatic silhouette evoked the architectural gowns that the late Spanish fashion designer was known for. Although Cox's choice in footwear wasn't visible under the floor-sweeping hem, the rest of this chic look delivered plenty of style inspiration.
