The Definitive Ranking of Your Favorite Fast-Food French Fries

Fast-food places can be completely polarizing. There were many times when I was a child where my brothers would demand one fast-food place for dinner but I would not settle for anything other than what I wanted. My poor, gracious, amazing dad would then have to go to three different places for food to appease us all. My strong opinions on fast food are still firmly in place, and when it comes to french fries, one of the greatest foods to exist in this world, I have a lot of opinions about them. While I don't think I would necessarily turn down fries from anywhere, I definitely have my favorites — and least favorites — that I ranked in the gallery ahead.

Shake Shack

Shake Shack

I'm never going to pick a crinkle fry over a shoestring fry. They are too fat and have too much mushy potato inside. Like In-N-Out, Shake Shack has awesome burgers, but the fries are subpar.

Sonic

Sonic

Sonic's fries are nothing special. They're just OK. They are a completely standard boring fry that you'll never distinguish from fries you make at home. The tater tots on offer are much better, in my opinion.

Burger King

Burger King

I like Burger King, I do, but its fries have never stood out to me. They have a good crispy outside, but there's nothing special about them. Like Sonic, they're just a bit boring.

Rally's/Checkers

Depending on where you live, you might know this place as Rally's or Checkers, but it's the fast-food joint that has two drive-throughs. Nevertheless, let's talk fries. Rally's fries are lightly seasoned, which makes them different from a lot of other fast-food fries. They're also a good balance of crispy and chewy, which I'm a fan of.

Jack in the Box

I love curly fries, full stop. Jack in the Box's curly fries are also lightly seasoned, so they have a lot going for them. The only issue with curly fries is that they don't always cook completely evenly because sometimes the curls are just too damn big.

In-N-Out

In-N-Out

In-N-Out's burgers may be amazing, but the fries are not quite as awesome. I do love that they're made fresh from potatoes right in front of you, but that's about the only special thing about them. The absolute freshness, though, is what keeps them as a favorite.

Steak 'n Shake

Steak 'n Shake

Steak 'n Shake has small shoestring fries that I've always been fond of. While I sometimes find them harder to eat when they're small, I like that they cook consistently and have a consistent texture. They pair perfectly with honey mustard, just a heads up.

Five Guys

Five Guys

Five Guys does not skimp on its servings of fries. Your order is an overflowing cup that's perfectly salted and cooked throughout. They feel and taste like real potatoes your mom might make at home and are easily some of my favorites.

02
Wendy's

Wendy's

Wendy's tweaked its fries recipe not too long ago, if I recall correctly, and sea salt was added to the mix. What a difference it makes. The fries also have the skins on, which makes them feel more rustic and homemade. All around, this is a top-notch french fry.

McDonald's

McDonald's

I will never love any other fast-food fries more than I love McDonald's. In my opinion, the fries are perfect. They have the perfectly balanced texture of crispy outside and soft inside. They're a good size to hold in your hand. They're perfectly salted, and they have that hint of beef flavor that really solidifies their greatness. If you don't love McDonald's french fries, I probably don't trust any of your food choices.
