Ikea Hack: Gold and Marble Shelves

How to Make Ikea Shelves Look Instantly More Expensive

Ikea Hack: Gold and Marble Shelves

With the weather getting colder, it's time to embrace indoor home-improvement projects. Style Me Pretty Living shows us how to turn an Ikea etagere into a stylish and affordable DIY gilded bookshelf.

It's no secret that gold is all the rage these days, which is why I'm particularly obsessed with this gilded DIY bookshelf. We've given this simple etagere, which was originally purchased at Ikea, an immediate upgrade with a little gilded love and some marble contact paper. The best part? The entire thing can be done for $100 total.

Materials:

Shelves

Beige marble contact paper (two rolls)

Natural marble contact paper (one roll)

Gold spray paint (two cans)

Scissors

Plastic drop cloth

Instructions:

Step One

Assemble the shelf frame according to the Ikea instructions. Lay it outside on a large plastic drop cloth and spray-paint it gold in three light coats, rotating the unit as needed. Let dry 1/2 hour.

Step Two

While the frame is drying, cover the fiberboard shelves in beige marble contact paper. Begin the contact paper at one end of the shelf and slowly peel away the backing, smoothing out any air bubbles as you go. Use the scissors to snip away extra contact paper at the corners.

Step Three

Cover one of the glass shelves with the natural marble contact paper in the same manner.

Step Four

Place the shelves in the gold frame, and style with your favorite books, glassware, and trinkets!
