6 Tips For Decorating Your Boyfriend’s Apartment

If you're bold enough to offer to help decorate your boyfriend's apartment, first of all, you deserve a high five. Next, you may need to know a few things before you get started to make sure the process goes as smoothly as possible.

After bravely volunteering to decorate my boyfriend's room, I quickly realized the extent of what I was promising. I thought I was going to be able to just decorate it however I wanted. These guys think they want to hand over all of the control, until the process actually starts. That's when I realized how much of a compromise this was really going to be and ended up learning a lot from the experience.

Decipher His Style

Before you start, it's important to ask him some questions about his style. At first, he may think he doesn't have a preference, but if you ask the right questions, you'll start to get a sense of what he really wants. First, find out what colors he gravitates towards as well as which ones he absolutely will not accept. Also make sure to clarify what neutrals he likes best — black or brown? Tan or gray?

Consider His Use Needs

Then try to get a sense of what he wants to do and feel when he's at home. Does he want it to feel calm and relaxed? Maybe going minimal is a good idea. Does he like to nap on the couch? Does he spend a lot of time in his bed? Does he want it to feel cool and reflect his creative side? Understanding his goals will help give you some direction.

Now start with the big pieces. Make sure to keep his preferences for neutral shades in mind when picking these out. My boyfriend tends to wear more brown than black, so it was easy to focus on brown wood furniture for his room.

Move On to Textiles

Move On to Textiles

Then move on to the textiles. At this stage, I think it's helpful to give your guy some options so you can get a sense of the type of prints he likes. Does he like more classic prints like stripes? Or more eclectic, tribal-inspired prints? Get a sense of which direction you should go with and stick with it. If you're stumped, just go simple and stick with soft textures. I guarantee your guy will complain if he steps on a jute rug barefoot, so make sure the rugs, blankets, and pillows you choose are super soft to the touch and you can't go wrong.

Have Ample Organizers

Have Ample Organizers

Make it as easy as possible for him to stay organized. My boyfriend particularly liked that I created a space for all of his "toys" (football, frisbee, etc.). We placed a crate next to his media console for him to store these things and I think he likes that he can just toss them in their own bin when he gets home from the park! Trays for his watch and wallet are helpful, as well as cups for all of that extra change he finds in his pockets.

Polish With Art

Guys tend to skimp on the artwork and decor, so adding these final touches will make sure the place feels complete. In order to stick with a more masculine feel, you can't go wrong with images of woods, trees, and nature. Materials like wood, metal, and leather are great as well. Finish by adding in personal items, like framed photos, books, and travel mementos to make the place really feel like home.
