To find out how to throw a stylish party on a budget, we consulted with Elizabeth Chambers Hammer, a journalist, entrepreneur, and co-owner of BIRD Bakery in San Antonio, which she started with her husband, actor Armie Hammer. Elizabeth's pro tips will take your next outdoor gathering from basic to unforgettable.

Light the Trees and Vertical Surroundings

Whether you use paper lanterns, stringer lights, or wrap a tree using good old tiny white Christmas lights, lighting your surroundings sets a festive mood and makes guests excited to be there!

Turn Silver Julep Cups Into Vases

"Even if your floral budget isn't a big one, little bouquets in these small cups make a statement. The exterior is reflective, which makes them seem larger than they are, and they're small enough so that they're not intimidating. Snip a few stems from the garden or pick up a few anemone, ranunculus, or peonies — and just like that, you have gorgeous flower arrangements on a budget."

Enliven Drinks With Pretty Paper Straws

"Order packages of a few different colors — gray and white striped along with another accent color — online (those from paper stores tend to be more expensive), and they add an added element of chic to any festivity."

Scatter Tea Lights

"They make everything glimmer and shimmer and cost very little. You can purchase them from World Market, Costco, or anywhere. Be sure to choose the white or ivory ones, and ensure they are unscented, so they don't interfere with the food. Place them in small mercury glasses, Moroccan-inspired drinking glasses, or any vessel you can find. You can't go wrong with tea lights."

Use Real Plates and Silverware

"Just because you're dining outdoors, does NOT mean that paper plates and plastic flatware are acceptable. Have fun with serving ware and mix and match! Go to estate sales or garage sales and look for fabulous plates, flatware, and serving pieces. Nothing has to match, and there are no rules. Just no paper or plastic, please!"

Create Different Stations and Seating Areas

"Whether you place a small blanket in the garden with flowers and a candle, or utilize an otherwise vacant bench, create places around the space for guests to perch. Keep in mind the flow of the party, and spread things out a bit. Nobody wants to be confined to just one table! It's all about creating an environment and experience."

Buy Balloons

"I love pearl and one other accent color in clusters of three. If you can find the 36-inch balloons for a reasonable price ($20 or under), two of those flanking the entry are alway fabulous. Otherwise, traditional balloons will absolutely do the trick!"

Plan Ahead

"No matter your budget, you can always plan ahead. Guests immediately take on your energy when they arrive, so plan accordingly so that you're not stressed or busy upon their arrival. Enjoy, and they will too!"
