13 Wedding Decor Detail Pictures You'll Regret Not Taking

Flip through any wedding photo album from the last few years and you'll see more than just pictures of the happy couple and their guests. Couples want photos that capture every detail of their big day, from beauty shots of the venue right down to close-ups of the decor. Chris Trementozzi and his wife Jordan are wedding photographers based out of San Diego, and together they own Next to Me Studios. One of Chris's favorite parts of a wedding is to take photos of the wedding decor. "It all tells part of a story and helps fill it out really well. It adds a lot of dimension to the wedding day itself," he says.

After all of those months spent planning and creating the perfect look, your wedding day is likely to go by in a flash — and you'll want some kind of keepsake to remember all of the little things. To ensure you get this, Chris recommends you communicate with your photographer.

"I'll usually talk to the couples before their wedding and we'll kind of ask them about all the decor and things that they have and it there's any significance to or story behind what they're doing," says Chris. "They're making these choices and these arrangements and different experiences all kind of tie into the emotion and the feeling and the joy and happiness and how their wedding plays out for their story, for their day."

When it comes to what decor elements to focus on, he says you'll regret not asking your photographer to capture the following 13 things.

Ceremony Decor

Even if ceremony decor is minimal compared to the reception, Chris still likes to capture the key elements of it. This includes any focal points of the ceremony like arches, flower arrangements, or lanterns.

Floral Details

Flowers are such a defining part of most weddings, and they're used many different ways throughout the decor. From bouquets to centerpieces to floral accents on an arbor at the ceremony, capturing every arrangement is important.

"I feel like some kind of floral or plant makes it into some aspect of each area of the wedding," Chris says. "Flowers are big."

For Chris and Jordan, it's all about capturing the couple's personality. Anything that adds to the overall atmosphere of the wedding is important to preserve. "I had a wedding that they did painted gold bottles and then hung them from the altar and then put flowers in them. That was pretty unique."

Chair Details

Gone are the days of boring rental chairs. Chris loves to capture the ways couples use different elements to decorate ordinary chairs. "If the chairs have any kind of decor, flowers, or anything hanging off of them, we'll grab pictures of that. If the chairs themselves they're using are unique, we'll grab that," he says.

05
Guest Books

Guest Books

Guest books are becoming more unique these days, Chris says. If you've set up a distinctive guest book, like this couple's guest poster, or dressed up your guest book table with lots of flowers and trinkets, have your photographer capture it.

06
Family Heirlooms

Family Heirlooms

A lot of couples incorporate items that have special meaning to them into their wedding decor. "Maybe the bride's dad made that card holder or it's their great-grandma's heirloom chest," says Chris. Let your photographer know beforehand which pieces have special meaning to you so they can be sure to capture it.

07
Favors and Keepsakes

Your wedding favors are likely to be gone by the end of the night, and you'll want to have a shot of the keepsake you gave to your guests, especially if they have special meaning to you. "We just did an aviation, flight-themed wedding because the groom was a pilot," says Chris. "They had these little cool metal bottle openers that were brass and shaped like a plane, and they also doubled as the seating chart and the favors."

Seating Charts and Escort Cards

Seating Charts and Escort Cards

Couples are getting more creative with seating charts and escort cards says Chris, so this is another decor item you'll want to grab a picture of. Beyond celebrating the bride and groom, wedding receptions are also about building an experience for their guests, and couples won't necessarily get to see pieces like seating charts once their busy big day is underway.

"People put so much time and effort into this stuff that I just really enjoy capturing it in a way that shows it off and it's unique and beautiful," says Chris.

Sweetheart Table

One of the biggest trends in weddings over the past couple of years has been signage. "If there's any type of signage, we definitely grab pictures of those," Chris says, noting that calligraphy and signage is a huge trend in weddings. He often captures photos of the signage on the "sweetheart" table, where rustic wood signs and banners are popular.

Centerpieces

Centerpieces

The centerpieces on your reception tables are a huge part of your guests' experience of the day. Make sure your photographer has time between the ceremony and the reception to sneak off and get some pictures of your centerpieces and table settings before your guests arrive at the tables.

Your photographer should also capture any unique table numbers or fancy glassware. Anything that adds to the overall look and feel of your wedding should be pretty easy for your photographer to identify and therefore photograph, Chris says.

Wedding Dessert Tables

A favorite decor piece for couples lately has been wedding dessert tables. Foodies everywhere are able to show off not only their favorite desserts, but also their impeccable style with the detailing and decor. "A lot of the decor is not something they can keep forever — but the photographs are something they can keep forever," Chris says.

The wedding cake is one of the defining pieces of your wedding and plays a central role, and since it won't last forever, it's a great idea to grab a picture of it — before you start to dig in.
