See the Places Barack and Michelle Called Home Before the White House

Until recently, Barack and Michelle Obama have proudly called 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue "home." For almost a decade, not only has this monumental White House served as their living quarters and "office space," but it has been where they have raised two cute little girls into poised and well-rounded young women. And while they already have their new home post-White House, we were curious to know where Barack and Michelle lived before they both became staples of American history. Read on for an inside look at their digs long before we referred to this power couple as president and first lady.

Honolulu

Barack Obama was born in Honolulu in 1961, making him the only president so far to originate from Hawaii. He took time off from the campaign trail in 2008 to visit his ailing grandmother, who continued to reside in Honolulu until her passing in November 2008. Barack can be seen taking time off from the campaign trail to visit her at home when her health was ailing.

South Shore, Chicago

Michelle Robinson was born in 1964 in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago and was raised in a home at 7436 S Euclid Ave. She shared the one-bedroom, one-bathroom house (with no air-conditioning) with her parents and older brother, Craig.

Jakarta, Indonesia

Barack also spent a brief period of his childhood in Jakarta, Indonesia, with his mother and stepfather.

He resided in an area known as the Menteng Dalam neighborhood in this modest house, but eventually returned to Honolulu. We can only imagine the kind of inspiration he gained here between the impressive architecture and overall global appeal.

Los Angeles

Once Barack was of age, he enrolled in and attended Occidental College in Los Angeles. He would later move from one coast to the other to finish his undergraduate degree in New York.

Princeton, NJ

Michelle, meanwhile, resided in New York's neighboring state of New Jersey while attending Princeton University. They would unknowingly find themselves in the same town soon enough, but not actually meet (and fall in love!) until much later.

New York City

Barack got a taste of city life while he completed his undergraduate degree at Columbia University. He resided in apartment 3E of this very building, located at 142 West 109th St. He embraced the Big Apple for about four years until relocating to Massachusetts to pursue his law degree at Harvard University.

Cambridge, MA

Both Barack and Michelle attended Harvard in Cambridge, MA, where they each received their juris doctor from the accredited university. While they spent a significant portion of their young lives here, this is not actually where they crossed paths.

Chicago

Upon their respective graduation dates, Michelle and Barack relocated to Chicago and found themselves working at the very same law firm, Sidley Austin LLP. Here, Michelle was tasked to advise the then-intern Barack and, as they say, the rest was history.

South Shore Cultural Center, Chicago

Michelle and Barack were wed in 1992 at Chicago's South Shore Cultural Center, another city staple.

Kenwood, Chicago

Chicago is and always will be a special place for the Obamas, as this city is not only Michelle's birthplace and hometown, but also where the young couple started their family. Before Barack won the presidency, the pair resided in this Georgian revival mansion located on 5046 S Greenwood Ave. for many years.

Washington DC

And, as we all know, the most recent residency of the Obamas was none other than the grand White House located in Washington DC. While it has been a wonderful eight years, we wish them the best of luck in this new chapter of their lives!
