"I started singing first," he told POPSUGAR. "That was the first passion I had."

He got his big break on a show called Rebelde, which, as he describes, "is very well known in every Spanish-speaking country and then some."

He left Mexico about eight years ago and decided to try his luck in Los Angeles.

Diego is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

"I recorded an album in Portuguese specifically for Brazil without even speaking the language," he explained. "It was one of those things where they flew me down there, handed me a piece of paper and said, 'Here's your coach, you have five days, knock out 11 songs.'" He did, though, fall in love with the language.

"After spending some time in Italy over Christmas break, I've been having a big dilemma as to whether I like Rome or Paris more," he said. "I love both."

Diego's hometown is Mexico City, and he has a special routine now when he visits. "The first thing I do when I'm in Mexico is go to my favorite taco place," he said.

He's a legal citizen of Mexico, the United States, and Spain.

Diego revealed a hidden talent on Scream Queens: doing a killer Matthew McConaughey impression.

As a child, Diego auditioned for what he called "the American Idol for kids." Out of thousands, he was chosen. And that's how his career began.

Diego's mom and dad are both engineers.

His little sister studies at Duke University.

Boxing doubles as training for action roles; Diego's been doing it for a year and a half.

"I'm very lucky to have amazing women in my life," he said of his relationship with his mother and sister. "I think that in order to become a better man, you need to have strong women around you. I'm very close to my mom and to my sister." Family, for Diego, comes first. "It's definitely part of my identity," he said.

It wasn't a tall order to get Diego to sign on to cohost a VS Pink Spring Break event in Cancun. "I've come here a lot on my breaks," he said. "I'll fly down to Cancun, Tulum, or Playa del Carmen."

Diego had an on-set tutor when he was growing up — and they're still in touch. "She's like my second mom," he said.
