There's never been a better time to fully experiment with new makeup techniques than New Year's Eve! With glitz and glitter in abundance, trade in your basic red matte lip for one of these three shiny, shimmery, and holographic lip trends.
1 Look 1: Ombre Lips
Something you may have seen floating around Pinterest is this take on the two-toned lip trend. It offers a playful way to use vibrant lip shades, while also keeping your look fun and youthful.
The toughest decision you'll have to make when recreating this look is what two colors to use. I opted for two pinkish-red shades, but you could choose anything you'd like. I've seen this done with every color from shocking orange to deep, moody black; it's really just based on your preference.
Line lips with a shade close to the lipstick you are choosing for the outer edge. This should be slightly darker than the color on the inside of the lips. I chose NYX Slim Lip Pencil in Plush Red ($3) for its creaminess.
Once the liner has been blended, apply the lighter shade of lipstick (or gloss) to the inner portion of the lips. I used Mally Beauty H3 Lip Gloss in Tea Rose ($20), which is more of a liquid lipstick.
If you chose to skip the liner blending, use a lip brush to apply the gloss for a more defined finish.
2 Look 2: Glitter Lips
The holidays are full of glitz and glitter so why not include this in your makeup routine? The trick to using glitter is to apply it using a strong hold gloss or liquid lipstick to guarantee a long-lasting effect that doesn't require constant touch-ups.
Start by applying a lip scrub or mask all over lips — this will eliminate any dry skin and also create a smooth canvas. I like Kaplan MD Lip 20 Mask ($48).
Once lips are smooth and set, apply a layer of liquid lipstick. Choose a shade that matches the glitter you'll be using. Since I'm using red, I chose Lorac Pro Liquid Lipstick in Berry Red ($19). Swipe the gloss generously all over lips.
The best and easiest way to apply glitter (without fallout) is to use a slightly damp cotton swap. I'd recommend using a fine glitter pigment; both MAC and NYX sell affordable options. Here, I'm using MAC Glitter in Reflects Rust ($22), a sparkling warm red.
To apply, dump a little glitter onto a plate and dip the cotton swap to pick up pigment. Once a good amount of glitter is on the swap, lightly touch to lips making sure not to apply too much!
3 Look 3: High-Shine Holographic Lips
To start, apply a lip pencil in a matching shade all over lips — this will act as a base for the gloss and lipstick. I used a red shade, like Laura Mericer Lip Pencil in Warm Poppy ($24).
When using both a gloss and lipstick, I prefer to use a matte lipstick so that the gloss will not muddy the color underneath. We suggest Oribe Lip Lust Crème Lipstick in The Red ($42).
Next, apply an iridescent gloss, like BareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lipgloss in Hypnotist ($18), for that eye-catching finish.
