Mexican actress Sandra Echeverría is a familiar face in the Latin entertainment industry. With major roles under her belt like Magda in Savages alongside fellow Mexican superstar Salma Hayek, you've definitely seen the stunning 31-year-old before.
In her newest film, Busco Novio Para Mi Mujer, Sandra stars opposite 2016 Premio Lo Nuestro host Arath de la Torre as Dana, a self-described "very authentic woman" who fearlessly speaks her mind.
I recently spoke to Sandra over the phone about this raw and relatable role, and during our conversation, I snuck in a few personal, life-related questions. How does she keep her skin so flawless? I wondered, as has anyone who's seen her Instagram. Where does she like to eat in her hometown of Mexico City? What was her craziest audition? Basically, I wanted to get to know Sandra IRL.
What I quickly discovered is that she, fast-talking and undeniably sweet, is authentic too, offering genuine responses to all my get-to-know-you questions — from her beauty must haves to her surprising postbaby weight-loss secret. Curious? Keep reading to find out exactly what she had to say.
1 She Swears by Makeup-Removing Wipes and Sunblock
"I always carry the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleaning Towlettes ($8) in my purse," Sandra told me. "The first thing I like to do when I'm finished working is remove [all this makeup]."
Also in her beauty arsenal? "A good serum or cream with sunblock . . . Because it doesn't matter if it's a little bit cloudy, the sun is still in your face, and it's still damaging you."
2 She Is a Foodie
If you're taking The New York Times's suggestion and planning a trip to Mexico City, Sandra says you must try these dining hot spots:
- Panadería Rosetta: "We've gotten a lot of very good places for bread, like for breakfast. Rosetta is one of the best restaurants in Mexico, and the chef [Elena Reygadas] does the best pastries and breads I have [ever] tried."
- Fisher's: "There's this fish taco that is the best in the world. Everybody has to try it when they go. It's very famous!"
- El Charco de las Ranas: "It's one of my favorite places for tacos, quesadillas — all that Mexican food."
3 She Has Some Great Love Advice
Sandra is happily married to her husband, Mexican singer-songwriter Leonardo de Lozanne. The duo tied the knot in 2014, and if they're making you swoon with their cuteness in the above photo (I'm right there with you), follow her sound love advice:
"The most important thing is to fight for the person that you chose," she stressed. "We can't always be happy, right? You have to understand that from [both yourself and] your partner. Sometimes your partner will be anxious or nervous or sad, and you have to support them, because you can't just quit."
4 Her Weight-Loss Secret Is Super Bizarre
Besides breastfeeding, Sandra credits drinking lots of water and cutting carbs with helping her get back in shape after recently giving birth to her son, Andres.
"I cut bread in the morning and tortillas at lunch. And at dinner, I would just eat some protein and vegetables," she revealed before mentioning her secret low-calorie option: tortillas de nopal (tortillas made from cactus). "They only have 20 calories!"
5 She Is Friends With Salma Hayek
Sandra played Salma Hayek's daughter in the 2012 film Savages, and they've remained close ever since. "She's such a secure woman who knows exactly what she wants," Sandra gushed.
"I learned a lot from her! While we were shooting Savages, she told me that I should never be afraid of dreaming big. That's the best advice I've ever received, because sometimes we're afraid to go for bigger things. I don't think you have to [be afraid]. I think you have to go for it — fight for it."
6 Her Craziest Audition Yet Was For West Side Story on Broadway
"I prepared so much; I worked with a soprano teacher [for three months] to sing the opera music and got a callback in New York. So I had to pay for my plane ticket, hotel, and everything," Sandra started, already breathless reliving the grueling incident.
"When they saw me singing [for Maria], they were like, 'Oh my God, we want to see you now, but for Anita's role.' And I was like, what? But she's mezzo-soprano, not soprano." In case you're wondering: mezzo-soprano is a lower-sounding voice (think Adele and Beyoncé) than soprano (think Mariah Carey).
"I went back the next day and sang 'America' for Anita in mezzo-soprano," she continued. "They loved it! 'Oh my god, you sing so well! Come back again tomorrow but for Maria's role.' So I went back and sang for [playwright] Arthur Laurents. He said, 'It was lovely, my dear!' I was so proud and so excited. Then, they offered me the understudy role."
7 She Is a Boxer
Just like Victoria's Secret Angel Adriana Lima and Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez, Sandra loves boxing. "It's very good cardio — it's good for your abdomen and whole body!"
8 She Is Full of Inspiration
Sandra loves to inspire her over one million followers on social media, so it's no wonder she had an amazing response when I asked her what being in the entertainment industry has taught her.
"Never give up," she exclaimed. "You have to keep working on yourself and try to be the best. [When] I have some free time, I go to Los Angeles and take courses — for acting or even English. I always like to be learning something new, and that's what I really recommend, because you've got to be ready when your opportunity comes."
9 She Has a Musical Background
Maybe you noticed Sandra's Vevo page on YouTube? Or her singing videos on Facebook? Since her last official music video was posted back in 2011, I had to ask if we could expect a Vevo revival soon.
"I don't really want to have a music career," she told me bluntly, explaining that it's not because she doesn't love music, she simply doesn't have time to fully commit to concerts or tours. "I really enjoy when people invite me to sing [with them]," she offered, referring to her must-see collaboration with Marc Anthony.
And though she has no career aspirations, she does write music in her spare time. "Rather than have my music on my computer, I prefer to share it with all my fans on social media."
