Joan Smalls loves a highly pigmented matte lip. The Puerto Rican supermodel made that clear when she showed up to the Met Gala in 2014 wearing a vibrant-purple lipstick with her beige Vera Wang gown. That now-famous lip color was custom-made by her makeup artist and couldn't be easily replicated by Joan at home. Lucky for us, the beauty really wanted the matte feel and shocking color of the look, so she called up Estée Lauder, who she's a spokesmodel for, and asked the brand to create a product that would achieve that.

"I've always liked how the colors in the Pure Color Lipstick line read on first swipe, without having to apply layer upon layer — which is a problem I often have, especially with my skin tone — so I asked, 'Can we do this formula, but make it more matte?'" Joan told Estée Edit in an interview. That led to Pure Color Envy Matte Sculpting Lipstick ($30), a new line consisting of 12 ultramatte lipsticks in shades from neutral to red to violet. "I believe in self expression. If you're going to go for it [with your makeup], then go hard!" said Joan of her try-everything makeup philosophy.
