Queen Máxima Just Took a Big Fashion Risk and Totally Pulled It Off

For years, we watched Queen Máxima of The Netherlands play it safe when it comes to fashion — professional looks, simple gowns, neutral colors — but then 2016 came around and the royal seemed determined to up her style by taking risks we would have never expected from a queen.

First, there was an Etro printed jumpsuit back in January, and now, there's this Tom Ford long-sleeved velvet and satin dress, featuring hot pink details and a sparkly fringed hem, worn by Queen Máxima at a reception in honor of the president of France during her recent visit to Paris. The gown is definetely not something we would have guessed to find in Máxima's closet, but the fashion risk totally worked, standing out among a sea of traditional gowns at the reception. Scroll ahead to check out more photos of the surprising look and admire Máxima's voluminous hairstyle, too.
