America Ferrera Just Delivered the Most Powerful Speech About Equality

If you weren't madly in love with America Ferrera before today, get ready to create full-on shrines for her. The actress and activist was honored at the Human Rights Campaign gala in Los Angeles with the Ally For Equality Award for her work in fighting for the rights of the LGBQT community. At the ceremony, America showed us all why she deserved the award and so much more.

"It's difficult to persist in light of attacks to our rights, in light of attacks on our community's physical safety, and in light of attacks on our spiritual well-being," she said in her acceptance speech. "We are all being called to rise up to a level of consciousness and a level of action we never imagined we would be called to. . . . We are being called to stand together, to fight together together, breathe together, rejuvenate together, and to nurture and to protect one another. We are called as allies in the resistance, but also allies in our sustenance."

But the most impactful moment of her speech came towards the end, when she admitted her fight to protect the LGBTQ community is personal. She said:

Anything I ever did for the rights of this community I did because I believe — with every fiber of my being — that my liberation is bound up in the liberation of my LGBTQ brothers and sisters, and in the liberation of my black brothers and sisters, and in the liberation of immigrants, and refugees, and Muslims, and sikhs, and women all over the world, and the incarcerated, and the criminalized, and the uneducated, and the poor, and the hungry, and, and, and, and, and.

That's when the crowd broke into cheers and America received a standing ovation. Scroll ahead to watch that powerful moment and more from America's speech.
