5 Things to Watch If You Love Netflix's One Day at a Time

If you can't wait until Netflix's One Day at a Time season two premieres and you've already watched season one a few more times than you care to admit, we're here to hold you over. The family dynamics and modern issues that the show, featuring a Latinx family, depicts are hard to come by on other TV shows and movies, but we've done our best and found five things you can add to your queue while you wait for Rita Moreno and her wild antics as Lydia to come back.

01
Cristela
ABC

Cristela

Snuggle under your comfiest throw for a weekend and binge-watch the first show to ever be created, produced, written, and starred in by a Latina. Cristela follows Cristela Hernandez as she figures out who she is after law school and during an unpaid internship at a law firm. It has all the family drama, complicated character development, and laughs that One Day at a Time has.

02
Jane the Virgin
The CW

Jane the Virgin

Who hasn't been inspired by Gina Rodriguez's words? You should pick up the show that made her a household name — if you aren't already one of its many fans. Jane the Virgin is the comedy-driven English equivalent of your favorite telenovela and chronicles Jane's life as she figures out motherhood after being unexpectedly artificially inseminated. The series also shines a light on the intergenerational dynamics all Latinxs know to be true.

03
Modern Family
ABC

Modern Family

While the only two Latinxs in the show are Gloria, played by Sofia Vergara, and her son Manny, Modern Family is a great depiction of what first-generation Americans and their parents go through. In the eight seasons (which are available to stream and easily binge-watch-worthy), you see Gloria making peace with Manny's assimilation into American culture and the way he picks and chooses what Colombian traditions apply most to his life. Like in One Day at a Time, the show speaks to an entirely new generation of Latinxs.

04
Ugly Betty
ABC

Ugly Betty

Throw it back to the America Ferrera-led sitcom that ran for four years and made a fan of everyone who came across it. The show was based on the telenovela Yo Soy Betty, La Fea and really takes you through Betty's character development. While she figures out who she is as a Mexican American and the new personal assistant at a fashion magazine, the audience is treated to tons of laughs and dialogue that never lags.

05
Everybody Loves Somebody
Pantelion Films

Everybody Loves Somebody

If binge-watching seasons of a show isn't your thing, indulge in this film featuring Karla Souza's awesome performance as a Mexican American career woman who is found between two love interests, a well-intentioned (albeit nosy) family, and endless funny moments. The bilingual rom-com has moments any Latinx can relate to and sympathize with.
