Gavin Newsom's POTUS Tweet

This Tweet Perfectly Sums Up the Underlying Meaning of Obama's Farewell Speech

President Obama ended his farewell address in Chicago with a nod to how he started his campaign for president — with hope: "Yes we did. Yes we can." While many fear Donald Trump's presidency, as he has provided many reasons to, Obama's final message was unwaveringly optimistic about the future.

California's Lieutenant Governor and former San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom interpreted Obama's speech as a call to action and continuation of progress. "[Obama's] speech wasn't a farewell, it was a call to cation," he tweeted.

Newsom's tweet is especially poignant as California gears up to fight Trump on his potentially problematic federal policies (like immigration and climate change).

Obama certainly did not hold back from criticizing Trump's alarming rhetoric, albeit without mentioning his name. He even directly called for citizens to run for office if they are unsatisfied with their legislature.

No line encapsulates Obama's push for progress more than his proclamation about all Americans: "For all our outward differences, we all share the same proud title: citizen." Citizens, when they are untied, have the power to push for progress.
