There Is So Much Wrong With Ivanka Trump’s Tweet About Working Without Pay

Ivanka Trump, a privileged white woman, is catching understandable heat for sharing a blog post on her site about "surviving" as an unpaid intern. Trump's tweet is problematic for several reasons. For one, interns should almost always be paid; most of the time interns do the work of a full-time employee and when they are not compensated as one, it's illegal. And since the post she shared was written by an unpaid intern who works for Trump herself, it highlights that she neglects to pay her interns.

Trump is wealthy so it seems entirely out of touch to give someone advice about surviving an unpaid internship — she wouldn't know what it's like to make ends meet as a working student without an income. Trump is also an activist for equal pay in the workplace so it's strange she would promote unpaid internships, given her stance on working mothers. Perhaps the most egregious, and maybe thoughtless, part of her tweet is the use of a darker skinned emoji in the accompanying photo. Alternatively, Trump could have used the darker skinned emoji to pander to an audience she doesn't represent, which is not much better. Not only is Trump white, but she's also insinuating a correlation between race, socioeconomic class, and working for free.

People on Twitter are predictably outraged by Trump's post. Here are some of the best responses.

@IvankaTrump this is gross exploitation and whoever is running this Twitter account needs to lead the forming of a labor union
