- The New York Times obtained a copy of Donald Trump's 1995 tax return. The document shows that he declared a $916 million loss that year. Claiming a loss so massive could have allowed Trump to legally avoid paying federal taxes for nearly two decades.
- The citizens of Colombia surprisingly voted against a peace agreement between the government and FARC, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. FARC is a Marxist guerrilla army made up of mostly rural farmers who have been fighting the government since 1964. The peace agreement would have allowed them to begin the process of becoming a legal political party.
- Theresa May, the new prime minister of the United Kingdom, announced her plans to leave the European Union. Britain will officially leave the Union by mid-2019, assuming negotiations go seamlessly.
- The Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi of Japan. Ohsumi discovered a vital cellular process called autophagy or "self-eating." His findings revealed how cells recycle their structures through autophagy.
- The most powerful tropical storm in the Atlantic since 2007 plowed through Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba over the weekend and continues to rattle the islands. Hurricane Matthew sustained 130-mile-per-hour winds and dumped 40 inches of rain in some parts of Haiti. Forecasters are unsure whether Hurricane Matthew will hit the East Coast of the United States.
- Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in her Paris hotel room on Monday. Thieves dressed as police officers reportedly locked her in the bathroom and stole jewelry worth an estimated $10 million.
