This Viral Photo of Refugee Children Represents Why the 2016 Olympics Are So Incredible
One of the most inspiring stories coming out of Rio is about the first ever refugee team to compete in the Olympics. The team is made up of 10 men and women who fled countries like Syria, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
People all over the world have been captivated by their story — especially those in their refugee camps. The official Olympics Instagram account posted this touching photo of children in a Kenyan refugee camp where five of the Olympic athletes lived with the caption, "The Olympics have set up screenings of the Games inside the Kakuma Refugee camp in Kenya so the refugees can cheer for their team and follow the Games. Five athletes come from this camp and will compete next week in athletics."
The photo has received more than 27,000 likes and hundreds of comments, such as, "That is wonderful! True spirit of the Olympics." The same account posted a photo of a refugee named Augustine Mwechi and a quote about what the refugee team means to him:
