Reaction to Senate Rejecting Gun Control Laws 2016
This Tweet Is Going Crazy Viral After the Senate Rejected Stronger Gun Control
On Monday, eight days after the Orlando nightclub massacre, the Senate voted against four gun control measures. The measures would have blocked people on terror watch lists from purchasing guns and expanded background checks.
In the hours since, this tweet by Igor Volsky has gone viral with more than 28,000 retweets and almost 20,000 favorites. Volsky is the deputy director at the Center for American Progress Action Fund.

The tweet features photos of senators, mostly Republicans, who voted against background checks stamped with how much money they have received from the National Rifle Association. John McCain has gotten the highest amount with $7.7 million. The information was collected from Open Secrets and is detailed in this Google doc.
Many believed the gun measures wouldn't pass given the timing of the presidential election and because they were attached to other controversial legislation such as whether to take passports away from terrorism suspects. The Senate agreed to vote on the measures after Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy spoke on the Senate floor for nearly 15 hours last week.
