Transgender Women Win Primaries in Colorado and Utah

2 Transgender Women You've Never Heard of Just Made History

Two transgender women, who both happen to be named Misty, just forged a new path for the LGBTQ community. Both women ran in the primaries for the Democratic party and won, marking a major cultural advancement for the US.

In Colorado, Misty Plowright won the Democratic primary for the 5th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. According to the Denver Post, Plowright decided to run because "corruption has overrun our system and our elected officials no longer represent us." Plowright's career has been far from political: she has worked in IT for over a decade but cites "life's school of hard knocks" as her main experience.

Misty Snow won Utah's Democratic primary for a seat in the United States Senate by a landslide. In what is being described as a "historic upset," Snow beat her favored opponent by nearly 19 percent. Snow's history is not political either; she was born in Salt Lake City and has worked at a grocery store for most of her life. Snow's platform is similar to that of Bernie Sanders; like Sanders, she is "determined to help create an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthiest 1% of our population." Snow will now face a Tea Party favorite in November, Senator Mike Lee.

Here's to more strides forward.
