A Pro's Take on Which Dog Will Win Best in Show at Westminster

If you're the betting type and think you know who's going to take home best in show at this week's Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, Purina Pro Plan has a challenge for you. This year, Purina Pro Plan teamed up with bracketologist Joe Lunardi to create the $1 Million Bracket Challenge, where you can win a million dollars . . . if you can correctly predict all seven group winners and best in show.

We caught up with Lunardi to get some insight on how the NCAA March Madness pro came up with the picks for his Westminster bracket and pulled out a few highlights to help you make your own bracket.

"My big upset is in the herding group; can you have a dark horse?" he said about choosing the Belgian Sheepdog to take the top spot in the herding group. For the record, the Belgian Sheepdog has never won the group at Westminster, but maybe this will be its year?

Overall, Lunardi said the factors he considered for his picks were the history of the breed in general and at shows, its overall pedigree, and general nutrition habits. The two picks that didn't quite include those factors were the working group winner and the toy group winner: "I went with the Rottweiler, just because I like saying Rottweiler. . . . I went with the Papillon because I like saying Papillon. It's like the Grey Poupon of Westminster."

Your Pet Could Totally Land You a Hot Date

A survey conducted by Purina of 1,600 Americans showed that having a pet can, in fact, enhance a romantic relationship. Key findings from the survey include:
54 percent of people have found their pet to be an instant conversation starter with someone they are interested in.
63 percent of people are likely to date someone who has a pet.
Nearly six out of 10 surveyed say that they are likely to consider a person with a dog more attractive.
33 percent of men agree single pet owners have a greater chance of getting a date on Valentine's Day than non-pet owners.

Dr. Zara Boland, Purina veterinarian, explained the results simply: "Not only do pets serve as a great conversation starter, but studies have also shown that pets can help release feel-good hormones in humans, including high levels of oxytocin, also known in some circles as the love hormone."

So this Valentine's Day, make sure you bring up your pet when you're out on the town, hoping to strike up a conversation with someone who could totally be Mr. Right. You never know, your pup could be the key to landing a date!
