While you were busy playing Pokémon Go, people on Instagram were going wild over an app that transforms your photos into art. Prisma translates your perhaps average images into artistic re-creations using artificial intelligence. The technology is engineered with an extensive knowledge of some of the world's most well-known artists and applies it to your photos.

The app is so good that when I first looked at some of the photos without knowing anything about it, I thought, "This looks exactly like Chuck Close's work." To my surprise, the algorithm clearly mimics the artist's memorable portraits and probably several other ones too.

According to Prisma's website, it uses "a unique combination of neural networks and artificial intelligence" to transform your photographs into the style you chose. We're transfixed after trying out the app for ourselves! Admittedly, it does seem reminiscent of our days spent in Apple's Photo Booth. While the app is a creative way to edit your photos, we don't see Prisma replacing the real deal anytime soon — but you'll probably continue to see it everywhere, especially now that it's available for Android. Check out some examples ahead and don't be surprised if you start using it obsessively too.
