28 Greyhound Bus Tips You Need to Know Before You Travel

Traveling by Greyhound bus certainly isn't glamorous, but it is economical — and sometimes, that's the number-one priority. If you want to explore America without having to book expensive flights or drive, then Greyhound may be the way to go. However, before you get your ticket and hit the road, make sure you follow these tips for making your journey the best it can be!

  1. Bring headphones.
  2. Get to the station VERY early (at least one hour before departure)!
  3. Get in the boarding line as soon as you can in order to get the seat you want.
  4. Have your ticket confirmation number with you when you arrive.
  5. Reserve your ticket early — this may make you eligible for discounted tickets and can improve your seat order if your bus line has one.
  6. If you check your bag, put something on your luggage to make it distinct and easier to spot.
  7. Use the bathroom on the bus only if you really need to; try waiting for bus stops to use the restrooms at Greyhound stations or restaurants.
  8. Pack snacks — food can't be bought on the bus, so you'll have to wait for stops to purchase it.
  9. Bring a lot of water with you.
  10. If you're traveling overnight, bring a blanket — the bus can get very chilly!
  11. Pack your phone charger in your carry-on bag, not your checked luggage; the buses have outlets.
  12. Download a playlist to your phone.
  13. Bring books, magazines, puzzles, and games to help pass the time.
  14. Download movies and TV shows to your devices.
  15. Be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your bags at all times.
  16. Don't misplace your boarding and re-boarding passes.
  17. Keep any valuables out of sight.
  18. Pack a small pillow so you can sleep.
  19. Bring a map or guidebook.
  20. Ask Greyhound employees for help if you're not sure about something!
  21. Avoid sitting near the bathroom.
  22. If you have to make a transfer, follow ALL instructions from your driver and Greyhound employees to avoid missing your connection.
  23. Bring wet wipes in case you need to wipe something down.
  24. Avoid bringing your laptop if possible.
  25. Pack an eye mask and ear plugs if you want to sleep.
  26. Bring cash in case you want to purchase supplies at a stop that doesn't accept cards.
  27. Make the most of the free Wifi on board.
  28. Get a window seat if you want to see the scenery and snap photos on your trip.
