Is Disney World Replacing the Tomorrowland Speedway With a Tron Roller Coaster?

Disneyland's classic Tower of Terror attraction was replaced with a fresh new Guardians of the Galaxy ride (will the Florida ride meet the same fate?) — and now rumors are flying that Walt Disney World's old-school Tomorrowland Speedway may be getting the boot for a Tron roller coaster.

With expected updates to the Tomorrowland section of the Magic Kingdom, there's speculation that a Tron Lightcycle Power Run coaster might be replacing the speedway, and though the original ride has been there since the opening of Disney World in 1971, the popularity of the Tron roller coaster at Shanghai Disney points to potential success if it made its way to the States. The Shanghai version of the Tron-inspired roller coaster takes passengers through a dark, twisting maze with brief moments of outside travel and is reminiscent of some of the animated scenes from the film.

There's no confirmation yet about all of the changes coming to Tomorrowland, but fans of the speedway better get some extra rides in just in case, because even if it isn't getting replaced entirely, signs point to the fact that the Tomorrowland Speedway will be closing for a facelift at the very least in anticipation of Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary in 2021.

Fingers crossed we find out more details at D23. The Official Disney Fan Club expo runs July 14-16 and is usually full of fun new park information. Stay tuned!
