Michelle Obama Brings Anna Wintour to Tears Before Her Big Night

Michelle Obama was the guest of honor at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Anna Wintour Costume Center in NYC on Monday. The first lady — fresh from the White House Correspondents' Dinner and dressed in a superstylish Naeem Khan dress — looked gorgeous and graceful as she spoke to the audience, and even shared a sweet hug with a crying Anna as she stepped on stage. Attendees included a multitude of fashion heavyweights like Oscar de la Renta, Donatella Versace, Diane von Furstenberg, and Marc Jacobs. Designer Stella McCartney was also on hand, playfully snapping selfies with Vogue editor Hamish Bowles and Sarah Jessica Parker; the Met Gala veteran is a cochair for tonight's event, which marks the inaugural gala for the newly appointed Anna Wintour Costume Center. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who are expected to attend the Met Gala with their younger sister Elizabeth, were also spotted staying close at the museum opening this morning.

The Anna Wintour Costume Center designates the space occupied by the Costume Institute and has been completely redesigned and renovated. It will reopen on Thursday, May 8, with the exhibition Charles James: Beyond Fashion. Before cutting the ribbon on the new space, Michelle Obama said, "Those of us blessed with the opportunity to succeed have an obligation to reach back and take others along with us," and called Vogue editor Anna Wintour an "inspiration multiplier." We have yet to find out if the first lady will be at the star-studded Met Gala tonight, but for now, you can scroll through to see her impressive appearance at the Costume Center.
