It's finally happening: after years of frustration over Barbie's unrealistic figure, Mattel has unveiled one of the most groundbreaking makeovers in the history of the toy industry. The doll maker has announced three new body types — curvy, petite, and tall — and more than a handful of new skin tones representing an array of ethnicities.
The new collection of dolls, called the 2016 Barbie Fashionistas, includes the original Barbie but also features seven diverse skin shades, 22 different eye colors, and 24 unique hairstyles. Plus, many of the dolls now have flat feet, in case a lifetime wearing heels also feels unrealistic. Each doll will be released over time throughout the year. But according to Mattel, this is just the beginning.
"Girls everywhere now have infinitely more ways to play out their stories and spark their imaginations through Barbie," the company said on its site. "From offering products that feature more empowering and imaginative roles to partnering with best-in-class role models, we believe in girls and their limitless potential."
