Parents Who Show Up to School Drop-Off in Pajamas Are Targeted by 1 Principal

You may have been there before — you're ushering your children out of the house and into the car before school with one shoe missing and jackets upside down — and before you realize what you're doing, you're driving away from your house in your pajamas. It's easy to forget about yourself when you're so concerned with getting your children ready for their day of learning, but one school in the UK is unhappy about the parents who show up in slippers and sweatpants, not because they had a chaotic morning, but because it's habit.

Kate Chisholm, the head teacher at Skerne Park Academy in Darlington, England, had begun to notice that many parents were walking their children into school — and sometimes attending parent nights and assemblies — in their nighttime loungewear.

She told Today Parents that it was getting to a point where she felt she needed to say something to the parents, so she sent out a letter.

Could I please ask that when you are escorting your children, you take the time to dress appropriately in day wear that is suitable for the weather conditions? While this may seem to be a minor point, I am sure you will agree that it is important for us all to set our children a good example about what is appropriate . . .

Her letter was met with an array of responses, some parents fully supporting her initiative, others wearing their pajamas more openly in protest. Even on Twitter, opinions were flying. Piers Morgan, British television personality, tweeted: "There is NO excuse for wearing pyjamas on the school run, or to shops. This slovenly scourge on society must be stopped." Meanwhile, Nick Pettigrew, a freelance writer, tweeted some food for thought on his account: "Some parents dropping their kids off at school in pyjamas might be fighting depression & leaving the house is a huge battle. Just a thought."
