Tennis player Mónica Puig has won the first ever Olympic gold medal for Puerto Rico. The 22-year-old champion defeated Germany's Angelique Kerber in an intense match that ended with Monica taking the highest honor in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games after winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Ranked thirty-fourth in the world before the Aug. 13 final match for gold, the Puerto Rican athlete had never made it into a quarterfinal in a major tournament. This win marks the island's ninth Olympic medal ever.
