I grew up having a long list of stereotypes foisted upon me simply because I was Latina. The assumptions made about my personality or what my life goals should be were annoying at best, and insulting at worst. So, putting together a list of pretty ridiculous things that have been said to me was an unfortunately easy task to complete. From people describing me as "spicy" to questioning me about my family, here are some phrases I'd be happy to never hear again — you might agree.
No, I'm Ecuadorean, but even if I was Mexican, why are you assuming? There are lots of Latin American countries.
I have a large family, yes. Does this mean that I'm automatically supposed to have (or want) a big family, too? Nope.
Nope, because — here comes a shocker — not all Latinas are born with rhythm. It's not a genetic predisposition.
Nope, I'm usually the first one there, so there goes your assumption.
You are aware we're not all made out of the same mold, right?
Yes, everyday, all the time, never tried any other food before in my life actually. Sigh.
