7 Hairstyles That Double as Halloween Costumes

  • You don't need an elaborate costume to have fun with your look on Halloween.
  • Some hairstyle trends make for good Halloween costumes all on their own.
  • Many of the styles are hairstylist-recommended and easy to re-create at home.

What if we told you that you can have fun with your look this Halloween simply with the hairstyle you choose to wear? For those of us who are last-minute planners (and who also aren't as skilled at elaborate, special-effects makeup), coming up with an Instagram-worthy Halloween costume can be quite the task. The good news is that there are tons of hairstyles out there that (in our humble opinions) can count as costumes all on their own. A few perfect examples for this year specifically? Butterfly clips as a Y2K costume, for instance, keep all of the attention on your hair for obvious reasons, while the retro hair flip will make you look like a '60s bombshell.

Now that spooky season has officially commenced, we put together a list of a handful of hairstyles — some of which are celebrity-hairstylist-recommended — that'll make the perfect additions to any plain Halloween costumes. The best part: all of them are easy to DIY at home.

Halloween Hairstyle: Butterfly Clips

Costume: Y2K

With the butterfly-clip comeback going incredibly strong this year, take things back to the early 2000s and add a few accessories to your hair for the night. The good news is you can find them in every variation depending on what look you're going for, from tiny acrylic clips like the Urban Renewal Vintage Colorful Mini Butterfly Clip Set ($10) to big, chunkier claw clip types like the Supergoop! Butterfly Hair Clip ($10). You can also choose from a wide range of colors, from blue to purple to pink and every shade in between.

This nostalgic accessory makes your hair the star of the show, and you can add them to any style, from curly to straight to half up, half down.

Halloween Hairstyle: Pink Hair

Costume: Barbie

Barbiecore has been the biggest trend in beauty this year, with everyone trading in their neutrals for all things pink. So, if you want to dress yourself up like Barbie, opting for a pink hair color is a surefire way to transform your costume. The easiest option would be to buy a wig, but you could also try a few DIY hair dye options. For brunettes, try the OverTone Pink For Brown Hair Coloring Conditioner ($32) if you don't want to bleach or lighten your natural hair, or if you want a semipermanent solution, try the Good Dye Young Color Semi-Perm Lighter Daze in Pink Puff ($18).

Halloween Hairstyle: Bubble Pigtails

Costume: Cheerleader

Pigtails alone are already playful, but bubble pigtails can add even more fun to your look no matter how plain your costume might be. "I love this trend because like all trends it starts with the kids and grows from there," celebrity hairstylist and Unite ambassador Graham Nation told POPSUGAR in March. "This is no different and honestly we can always learn from each other especially the youth and how to keep things fun and interesting."

Bubble pigtails are incredibly easy to do on your own, and all you'll really need to get the look is hairspray and some elastics. "Fun tip: you can use different-color elastics for a pop of color in the ponytail or to match your outfit of the day or your face mask," hairstylist Mark Townsend previously told POPSUGAR.

Halloween Hairstyle: Mermaid Braid

Costume: Mermaid

Mermaid ponytail braids are practically everywhere right now, and you can make them look as simple or complex as you want them to be. Choose a specific color — like blue or purple — to match your overall costume, or channel the vibe of fish scales by weaving in a gold or silver string as the ultimate hair accessory. This braid works best when it's extra long in length, so if you're hair is naturally shorter, pick up some ponytail extensions to ensure your style goes the extra mile.

Halloween Hairstyle: Flipped Bob

Costume: Retro chic

The '60s-style hair flip made a huge comeback this year, and it's the perfect kind of style to incorporate into a retro costume for Halloween. "Whether it's paired with a ponytail; half up, half down; all down with a side or middle part — I think it's such a fun way to spice up a sleek straight look," celebrity hairstylist and Unite stylist Hayley Heckmann previously told POPSUGAR. "The style is super flattering on everyone and totally elevates a look."

This version of the features sleek, pin-straight hair with the ends curled up into a sharp C shape so to DIY the look at home, make sure you have a 1.5 to 2-inch curling iron barrel to flip the ends of your hair. Then, apply a smoothing serum or styling gel all over before brushing it as close to the head as possible with a boar-bristle hairbrush. Mist the final look with strong-hold hairspray to keep the style in place.

Halloween Hairstyle: Baby Braids

Costume: Baby Spice

The baby-braid trend is pretty simple — with plaits that can vary between loose to super-tight depending on your preference — but the face-framing, nostalgic hairstyle is also easy to do at home and can be quickly dressed up with different colors or cute accessories like hair clips, hair dye, rope, or snap clips.

"Colored elastics are a great way to add some dimension with pops of color to your hair look and can be done in an easy couple of minutes," celebrity hairstylist Laura Polko previously told POPSUGAR.

Halloween Hairstyle: Space Buns

Costume: Zenon

You don't need a wildly complex costume to wear space buns — the hairstyle alone instantly says "outer space." These can be as big or as small as you want them to be, and you can even dress them up with certain hair accessories or glitter.

To re-create the space-buns hairstyle, part hair your down the middle and divide two sections on either side into two pigtails using as much hair as you'll want for the buns. Once secured, loop them into messy buns. Or, if you want to put an elevated twist on the look, start on one side of the head and split the pigtail into two pieces. "Starting with the first piece, start twisting the hair until it begins to coil on top of itself, but leave the ends out," celebrity hairstylist Laura Polko previously told POPSUGAR.

Once you've created the desired shape, use hair pins or bobby pins to hold it in place. Repeat that process with the other section of the pigtail, then move on to the other side of the head.
